Friday the 13th

Happy Friday the 13th! A much maligned day due to some people’s feelings that 13 is an unlucky number making Friday the 13th the unluckiest day of the year. This phobia is so widespread that it is estimated that $800-900 million dollars are lost by various businesses on this day due to some people just being too afraid to leave their house.

I actually enjoy these days. I do not believe in superstitions and feel the only way you could be adversely affected is if you allow yourself to be. I like walking past a black cat because I like felines. If there is nowhere else to go I will happily stride underneath a ladder. Maybe this Friday the 13th I will do both!

In honor of Friday the 13th I will be giving my opinion on the movie series of the same name for Monday’s blog post. I own all of them on home video, including the recent remake, and enjoy the series.

My advice for today is to enjoy yourself and wish everyone a Happy Friday the 13th!

Man of Steel

Finally, a damn good modern Superman movie. I was excited when I saw the first trailer and had high hopes for this movie and it did not disappoint. I saw it opening weekend at the movie theater and watched it again recently on blu-ray and enjoyed it even more.

The main thing that made this movie work so well was Henry Cavill as Superman. Perfect casting. They did not just go for someone with the right look, but someone who could really portray this character perfectly for a modern audience. Unlike most portrayals of the first superhero, Cavill did not come off as perfect. When Zod threatens his mother we see a natural reaction of pure rage and the destruction that can be caused by someone in that mental state who has super powers. Some people did not like that aspect of his character in the movie, but I really felt it rang true. He is young and learning and mistakes will be made which is how life works.

I also enjoyed Michael Shannon’s Zod. He showed glimpses of being a good person, but in the end threw it out the door and was willing to sacrifice an entire planet to save his people…understandable, but still pretty darn nasty. His fights with Superman were brutal and came off amazingly well.

Other great casting choices include Amy Adams as Lois Lane. I never liked Margot Kidder’s portrayal of Superman’s love interest and really feel that Adams is the first person to nail that character perfectly. Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, etc…were all great casting choices. A lot of effort was put into making this a great Superman movie and I really feel they succeeded.

The biggest point of contention many people had with this movie is when *spoiler alert* Superman kills Zod. The general consensus was that Superman would never kill. I have two issues with that. First off, in this movie he is not a flawless character as we normally see him portrayed. He is young and learning so mistakes will be made. Secondly, one of the biggest issues I have with heroes in comic books is when they do not kill. If Batman would just kill the Joker then thousands of lives would be saved. Superman killing Zod saved that family and untold numbers of other lives. Zod had to die. It was the right thing to do.

This is definitely a must see movie and only gets better with repeated viewings.

Opinions and Why They Do Not Matter

This may seem like a strange topic to discuss on a blog where I share my opinion three times a week, but I feel it has merit as a topic of discussion and will not discredit everything I have written and will write.

Opinions can be fun to share. I enjoy stating my feelings on a topic I enjoy as a whole and seeing what others feel on those same topics, whether they agree with me or not. I enjoy reading differing opinions because every person on this planet has the right to voice their opinion. The world would be painfully boring if we all agreed on everything whether it be something mundane as movies and music or more serious matters like politics or human rights.

At the end of the day I cannot help but question whether any of those same opinions matter? I try to avoid politics and other important topics so as not to offend, but if I did start to share those opinions would it matter? Would it make me a better or lesser person in some people’s eyes? No, I am not going to start discussing these topics any time soon, but I cannot help but wonder if, as I start to gain more readers, if I would turn some of them off by having a single post with a strong political opinion and the rest would be as normal? Would that be fair to me? Would that be fair to the readers?

At the end of the day my opinions on wrestling, super hero movies or the end of a television show are fun to share and do give a slight glimpse into who I am as a person, but would one ‘important’ opinion shared, no matter how controversial it may be, be enough to change someone’s opinion of me and either make me look good or bad in their eyes?

Opinions are possibly the biggest thing we read on the internet. Whether someone shares a picture of a cute kitten with a tagline of “super cute”, a movie review, or an article on today’s news happenings they are all providing opinions to greater and lesser degrees. Should a bad movie review prevent you from watching a movie and enjoying it? Should someone’s opinion on a topic make you think more or less of them no matter what else that person feels or does?

My feelings are pretty simple…I respect everyone’s opinion and expect them to return the favor. If our opinions are so different I would have a hard time getting along with someone then I would simply avoid them and let them live there life any way they choose. I love living in a world of differing opinions. I like being challenged respectfully and made to look at certain situations differently.

If I just shut myself off to everyone who did not agree with me then I would live a very mundane life. My wife and I share a lot of opinions, but from time to time we disagree and that is a good thing. If I agreed with her all the time then my knowledge would never expand and I would be stuck in a mental rut.

Opinions are great and we should all share them, but remember, they really do not matter 🙂

The Nolan Batman Trilogy

images

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is the best portrayal of the title character and his mythos we have seen in movies/television to date. All three movies were well done and made Batman relevant to the general public again.

I will give my opinion on all three in this single post…I am assuming most people have seen all three movies so there may be spoilers without warning:

Batman Begins:

Hot damn this is a great movie! I was thrilled when I heard they were re-launching Batman and looked forward to a more serious, realistic tone and this film did not disappoint. Christian Bale is the perfect Batman/Bruce Wayne. I feel he is the first actor to get both sides of this character right. Yes, I agree that his Batman voice is a bit over the top, but for me it works. Michael Keaton was a great Batman, but did not get the character of Bruce Wayne correct in my opinion. He was brooding in both roles and seemed to forget that Wayne pretended to be happy out of the costume so people would not make the connection between him and his superhero persona. Bale was a terrific Batman and portrayed Wayne’s artificial ‘playboy’ persona perfectly. I do not feel his performance of the title character will be surpassed any time soon.

The overall casting of this movie was perfect with Cillian Murphy as a terrifying Scarecrow and Liam Neeson as the true Ra’s Al Ghul working as perfect villains for this origin tale. Michael Kane as Alfred with Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon was great casting of two of Batman’s most trusted allies. The only casting choice that I did not like was Katie Holmes as Wayne’s love interest. This was a character that was not needed to make this movie work and would have made it that much better if she was excised from the script all together.

Overall, this was a great re-telling of Batman’s origin and was a very promising start to the franchise.

The Dark Knight:

The BEST Batman movie ever! Simply WOW! The late Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker was pure brilliance and he more than deserved the Academy Award he won posthumously. I still love Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of The Joker from years ago, but Ledger’s was, and may possibly always be, the best. He was simply perfect and really had a grasp on all of the character’s nuances.

Aaron Eckhart also did a fantastic job as Harvey Dent/Two Face. He made you root for his character throughout the movie and feel sympathy when he was hideously scarred and sought revenge. His death at the end of the movie was appropriate, but I would have liked to have seen him in the final film.

Overall, this is one of those rare 2 hour plus movies that keeps your attention throughout and wanting more.

The Dark Knight Rises:

Not the best of the three, but definitely one of the best Batman movies overall. It seemed like a natural progression from the end of the previous film and was overall well done and a fitting end to Nolan’s trilogy.

Anne Hathaway did a good job as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. I was not expecting much so I was surprised when she did such a great job and really held her own.

Tom Hardy as Bane was a great casting choice and despite the peculiar voice, I felt the portrayal of Bane in this movie was well done.

I only had 2 issues with the film…it seemed a tad too long and the reveal at the end of Ra’s Al Guhl’s daughter Talia being behind everything did not seem to be too effective. It may be because I already knew about this event, but it still seemed to not have the kind of “punch’ you would want.

I really enjoyed how the movie ended with Bruce Wayne finding happiness and Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) turning out to be Robin and taking on the mantle of Batman.

Overall, this was a terrific trilogy that did Batman justice.

I sincerely hope Ben Affleck can do an admirable job portraying this legendary character, but do not expect him to surpass Bale’s.

Here’s hoping we do not get another George Clooney type performance!

The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Finale

The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Finale was full of big changes that all worked well. There were a lot of risks taken, but they all paid off and left me impatiently looking forward to the start of season 8.

Stu’s comic shop burning down initially left me feeling disappointed in such a major change, but when he wound up becoming Howard’s Mother’s care giver it worked surprisingly well and I am looking forward to that new dynamic for a character I really enjoy and wish would have something good happen to him for a change.

It is nice to see Raj having a successful relationship for once. I hated the character of Lucy with a passion. She had some humorous moments, but overall was annoying and not the right choice for the character of Raj. His new girlfriend seems perfect for him and I sincerely hope they keep going in this direction.

I actually like the fact the Penny and Leonard are engaged. I have found the volatility of their relationship to be a bit frustrating at times, but this past season the characters seem to have moved past some of that and the engagement does feel like the correct direction for them to go in.

The biggest moment in the show though is Sheldon going out on his own to “discover” himself. Surprisingly, it truly seemed like a great way to start evolving the character past what we as viewers are used to. I love the character of Sheldon, but at some point he does need to evolve at least a little bit. The possibilities are endless for what he could experience while exploring the world and I hope the writers come up with some great moments and smart character development for next season.

Overall, The Big Bang Theory proves once again why it is the top rated comedy and will more than likely stay that way for it’s entire run.

Green Lantern

imagesCA2VNCBQ

Green Lantern was a much maligned movie that I feel very strongly did not deserve the poor reviews it received. Was it a great movie? No. Was it bad like Ghost Rider? No. It was a very entertaining film that had more good moments than bad.

The positive…

I felt that Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern was a good fit. I do agree with a lot of people that Nathan Fillion would have been better, but with Reynolds they got a very well known actor who did a good job in the role.

Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond was another strong point. You did feel sympathy for him regarding his strained relationship with his father, but he was a creepy villain that you definitely wanted to see get his behind kicked.

Possibly the best part of the movie was Mark Strong as Sinestro. He is not yet the villain, but Strong did a masterful job of portraying a complex character and giving just the right amount of nuance to hint at his eventual turn in future movies.

The not so positive…

Parallax…the main issue is the CGI was just not up to par. He looked too cartoony at times. Also, he is a major villain who affects Hal Jordan in a major way  in the comics and having been relegated to just a one-off in this first movie seemed a real waste. Parallax is a nemesis that should have been built up to in future movies for a much more dramatic final battle.

Blake Lively as Carol Ferris was sort of eh..she was not terrible, but her portrayal of Ferris could have been much better especially since this a major character in the Green Lantern universe and goes though many interesting changes.

The most unfortunate situation with the mostly negative reaction to the movie is we will not get any sequels. Seeing Sinestro’s full turn in a second movie would have been amazing, but we will have too settle for only a small scene in the credits. With a full-on, bad guy Sinestro, the second movie could have taken a huge leap forward in quality in many people’s eyes. I really feel a second movie could have righted the ship for many people and perhaps made this a more viable franchise.

With Warner Bros./DC pushing ahead with a Justice League movie I really hope they include the character of Green Lantern. He is an important part of the League and whether they recast Hal Jordan or go with the John Stewart version, I sincerely hope they do not leave this character out due to the solo movie’s negative reception.

It is a good movie that deserves a viewing no matter what you may have heard about it.

Community

community-promo-570x359

One of my favorite shows of the past 5 years has been NBC’s Community. Funny, beyond irreverent, tons of in-jokes, and just downright awesome, this was a show to watch for people looking for a truly unique comedy. The hope was for a 6th and final season with a movie to wrap it all up, but that will not occur since NBC cancelled the show and per the creator’s they are not looking to move the show to another viewing option.

Not counting the disjointed season 4, this show always provided great humor and biting commentary. The show is filled with wonderful actors and performances, but the stand out for me was always Abed played by Danny Pudi. Abed was a character disconnected from reality, but who was always there for his friends when it counted. I was always frustrated that Pudi was never nominated for an Emmy because he was truly deserving with his amazing portrayal of a truly complicated character.

The problem the show had was that NBC insisted on pairing it against Big Bang Theory for most of it’s run. No one can or will beat that show in the ratings so I could not help but feel like NBC was trying to make the show fail, but the fans kept it alive as long as possible.

If you have not had a chance to watch this show you can view all the episodes through Hulu Plus. It is worth your time and will probably leave you wishing for a 6th season as well.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Nicolas Cage is an interesting actor. Is he a great actor? No…he is the same person in every role he has ever played. Has he been in more bad movies than good? Yes. Are some of the same movies worth a watch only because of Cage’s over the top and very unique acting style? Hell yes and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is one of those movies.

I keep hoping they will come out with a Ghost Rider movie that really honors the source material. I would love to see something similar to the first two Blade movies. Good quality R-rated horror. Two movies in and we have not gotten close, but since Marvel has regained the rights to the character recently perhaps there is hope for the future. For now we have these Nicolas Cage vehicles which are not good by any stretch of the imagination, but are fun nonetheless.

The first one was okay, but in terms of bad movies Spirit of Vengeance was the superior of the two. Cage was somehow even more over the top than the first film, but it worked in a bizarre way. I am always surprised that he is still a working actor, yet I find myself buying his films and actually enjoying them. I believe Mr. Cage is deserving of a long term, analytical study to determine why many people like myself still watch his work and actually do not feel guilty afterwards as we should.

This movie was strange and seemed like the director did not know what was going on half the time, but I still enjoyed this movie and paid attention throughout. I was going to go into more detail on the storyline, but figured that would be a waste of energy since it seemed to not be a focus of this film.

I enjoyed that there was a pivotal character named Danny who is a reference to the alter ego of another incarnation of Ghost Rider, Danny Ketch. I also enjoyed Idris Elba as Moreau. He was over the top as well, but Elba always adds a gravitas to his performances and it worked.

If you have Netflix and 96 minutes to kill and are not worried about losing a few brain cells, watch this movie and revel in the fact that Marvel has the rights back and will hopefully give us a great Ghost Rider movie in the future.

Kirby Krackle

kirbykrackle

Just a quick post today to send you in the right direction for finding good music.

One of my favorite current bands is Kirby Krackle. I first heard of them on a podcast I listened to regularly called Comic Geek Speak. There music is referred to as ‘nerd rock’ since the topic of their songs usually covers video games, comic books, and anything one would consider geeky.

Their debut self-titled album came out in 2009 and was a great start, but their second release, E for Everyone, was where they really hit their stride. The song Ring Capacity has to be one of the catchiest songs of all time. After hundreds of listens over the past couple of years I still have not gotten tired of the song.

You can purchase their albums and other merchandise at their website, http://kirbykracklemusic.com, or visit iTunes.

If you like catchy pop rock music and are into everything geeky then you will not be disappointed.

The Amazing Spider-Man

the_amazing_spiderman_background_1920x1080_33127

With the recent release of Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which I have yet to see) I figured I would give my opinion on the first movie in the Spider-Man relaunch.

My first reaction to this movie was just how impressed I am by Andrew Garfield’s interpretation of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. For the most part I enjoyed the original Sam Raimi trilogy, but did not like Tobey Maguire’s performance. I thought he never got the character’s intricacies correct and just played him like the stereotypical nerd who just happens to get super powers. He never seemed comfortable when firing off Spider-Man’s trademark quips and in my opinion was not very believable in the dual role. Garfield is now the quintessential live action Spider-Man.

He nailed Parker’s awkwardness and the tragedy of his Uncle’s death, plus he perfectly captured the freedom the character feels dressed as Spider-Man with his snappy one liners and seemingly carefree attitude. In my opinion he was as perfect for the role as one could be. We will see him for at least 3 movies and I really look forward to his character progression.

The other improvement this movie made was in the female lead. Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane in the original 3 movies was a terrible choice. Mary Jane is a character that has personal issues but always hides it behind this perpetually positive attitude and outward confidence. Dunst clearly had no clue about the character and portrayed her as a brooding, emo girl which was a terrible decision on her part. To go with Gwen Stacy as the initial female lead in these new movies was not only a great idea, but the casting of Emma Stone was pure genius. Not only does she truly capture the character, but her chemistry with Garfield (I am sure dating in real life helped) really made this movie work on many levels.

Ryhs Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard also worked well despite the CGI for the villain being a little off in places. He was a sympathetic villain and played his part in the movie quite well.

The rest of the cast really rounded out the movie perfectly. Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Ben and May Parker was a great casting choice as was Denis Leary as Captain Stacy. Stan Lee’s expected cameo was also entertaining as always.

As for the movie itself, it was a great start for this reboot. I initially felt it was way too soon to completely recast the movie and pull the Hollywood reboot routine, but it worked out well and I am really looking forward to future installments.

With mixed opinions on the sequel and the fact that the studio seems to be going a little overboard announcing Venom and Sinister Six movies so soon, I cannot help but be a little concerned with the directions the franchise may be going in, but I will remain positive and look forward to more Spider-Man goodness for years to come.
