LJN WWF Wrestling Superstars

Of my many hobbies/interests one of the top ones is collecting toys of all kinds, from Star Wars to G.I. Joe to kid’s meal toys I collect just about everything. Being a big wrestling fan means a large part of my toy collection is toys from the world of sports entertainment. The first really big wrestling toy release came in 1984 with the LJN WWF Wrestling Superstars line. Huge, rubbery versions of all the WWF’s superstars were very popular and still are. I did not collect these figures when they came out, but bought a couple of loose (out of the package) figures later in the life. As of today I only own Hillbilly Jim and George the Animal Steele but hope to add to the collection in the near future.

Compared to today’s toys these do not seem very exciting at first since they have no articulation and are made of rubber, but there was something about them that made them popular with kid’s at the time and collector’s now. The simplicity added to their charm. There have been much better looking and more playable wrestling figures since then, but they just don’t hold a candle to these big pieces of rubber that take a lot of damage and may have some paint worn off over time, but still retain their charm.

I have included this link, http://www.cardboardconnection.com/ljn-wwf-wrestling-superstars-figures-checklist-guide, to a great website that lists the various figures that came out so you can have a look.

Next week I am going to discuss the 1990’s Hasbro action figures which also hold a special place in most wrestling fan’s collections as well as my own.

The Cornetto Trilogy

In 2004 a small film titled Shaun of the Dead came out and quickly became a favorite for horror and comedy fans alike. My wife, daughter, and myself all love this movie and never get tired of watching it over and over again. This movie started what has come to be known as the Cornetto Trilogy, based around the references to the Cornetto brand of ice cream treats in each film and the recurring set of actors we see in each movie.  Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost have created a series of loosely connected films that have all proven to be immensely entertaining and have grown a tremendous fan base. All three movies are more than worth your time and deserve multiple viewings to catch all the hidden references and easter eggs. Below is my brief opinion of each movie.

the_cornetto_trilogy_by_jazadesign-d6v367w

Shaun of the Dead is quite frankly an amazing movie. The perfect blend of horror and comedy where the humor does not minimize the violent aspects of a zombie film, but actually add to it. This was one of those films that came out of nowhere and quickly developed a cult following. Even if you are not a fan of horror you need to give this film a shot. The social commentary is brilliant and accurate. If you are a horror movie aficionado the references to various zombie films are a thrill to discover. This is one of those rare films that I never seem to get tired of watching.

Hot Fuzz came next and stepped away from the horror side, but the violence and gore makes it seem awfully close to being one. It definitely has a different tone than Shaun of the Dead, but still seems to fit perfectly into this loosely connected ‘universe’. It is funny and violent throughout and the final act of the film is non-stop violent, over-the-top, fun. This is definitely a movie that needs multiple viewings since I am still finding new things despite watching this movie more than a handful of times.

The third and final film is The World’s End. This time we are watching a sci-fi comedy that does not disappoint.and perfectly continues the irreverent theme running through the entire “trilogy”. There was concern that Pegg, Frost, and Wright may not be able to triplicate their success, but that concern was unnecessary. Yet another great film from these three minds.

These are all great movies that need to be seen by anyone who considers themselves a fan of a bit off-center movie making. They have developed a huge fan base and deservedly so.

Costume Corner – Renaissance Wedding, Part 4

Welcome to the fourth and final post on my Renaissance wedding.  Today, I am talking about what the groom, groomsmen, guests and the minister were wearing.

Groom

McCalls 2802

McCalls #2802

Cap’s mom made his tunic from McCalls pattern #2802.  It’s the style shown in blue and white in the picture on the right.  Let’s talk about that picture though,  kind of  ridiculous, right?   I mean, what is with that hat?  I’ve never seen any Renaissance costume with a hat like that.  Obviously, we skipped the hat but we also skipped the jaunty vest that they refer to as a surcoat.

CC RW 4aCap’s tunic is was made from blue velvet.  If you’ve never worked with velvet, it can be really difficult.  When sewing you have to pin the velvet every inch or so because it slides like crazy.  It sews pretty well once you have it pinned down, you just want to make sure that it’s all lined up.  There’s nothing worse than finishing a long seam only to find that there’s a puckered spot midway through the section.  Velvet is really heavy as well, so the seams need to be strong.

GroomsmenCC RW 4b

The tunics the groomsmen wore were also from McCalls #2802, in a black velveteen.  Cap’s mom sewed those as well, the shirts were made from white broadcloth from the same pattern.  We cheated with the pants and just bought leggings since they would be tucked into the lace up boots.  I matched the cording for each groomsmen and bridesmaid pairing, only because I am kind of dorky like that.   The guys said that the tunic and pants were very comfortable.

Family

I made my father the same tunic, shirt and pants as the groomsmen.  Originally, I wanted to make him something a bit more fun and interesting but since Cap’s father was his best man I didn’t want to do anything offset the balance there.  It was a good decision because he looked great with my mom in her black velvet dress.

Butterick 5656
Butterick #5656

My brother and my nephew used Butterick pattern #5656. They looked great in their tunics and capes.

Here is a pic of the flagbearers, my brother’s oldest, my niece and nephew.  So happy that they could be there and part of the wedding.

Minister

We found a great minister, he was a friend of a friend and he was awesome.  He was happy to work with us and wasCC RW 4d quite accomodating with our less than traditional wedding.  When we talked about the wedding and what he would wear I offered to make him a costume.  He was very pleased.  I honestly can’t remember if I made him the cassock type robe underneath or if that was his already.  I did so much sewing during those six months and especially in the last month that I just don’t remember.   If I did, the robe would have been made out of white muslin and just made to slip over his head.

Princess bride priest1

I modeled his robe off the of the bishop’s robe in The Princess Bride.  It was much simpler and less ornate but I was really pleased with how it turned out.   I used a rectangular piece of fabric, I believe I used party taffeta, mostly because it has a stiffness to it without being very heavy.  In the front I added a panel connecting the two edges, I embellished it with gold fabric and trim. CC RW 4e I appliqued a large stylized Celtic cross to the back.   The back of the robe was long enough to trail behind him a foot or two.  There is a picture somewhere of him walking away with his robe flowing out behind him but I’ve looked through our photos about five times trying to find it but it is nowhere to be found.  I’ll update this post though it if shows up.

All in all, the wedding was a lot of work but it was so much fun and I love that instead of spending money on renting tuxes and horrid bridesmaid dresses that would never be worn again, I provided a costume that they could wear whenever they wanted.  It was definitely worth the work and since I did so much creatively; sewing, bouquets, vows,  the wedding really was uniquely mine.

I will leave you with my absolute favorite pic from the wedding.  We had just signed the marriage certificate and we had a moment to ourselves before pictures started.

Next week, I’ll be talking about costumes for kids.

A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, and Yellow Submarine

Hey guys! Like I said last week, I’ll be reviewing the four Beatles movies; A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, and Yellow Submarine.

I decided to exclude Let It Be, since that’s just footage of the creation and progression of the last released album, Let It Be. Now, my Beatles movie knowledge is a bit fuzzy. I’ve just gotten into them a few months ago, but I’ll try my hardest on this!

A Hard Day’s Night was the Beatles first movie, in 1964. Recently, it was the anniversary of the movie and was re-released on July fourth. They’re just so young, it’s really quite cute to see them act for the first time. And it’s so sweet that George Harrison met his first wife, Pattie Boyd, on set. I hope to get to see the remastered version on DVD soon!

Personally, I think Help!, in 1965, is the best of the four movies. They’d gotten better at acting and it was more comfortable. The humor was better than last time, and I appreciate that. I really do love the movie, but there really isn’t much to say about it. I think the plot, while quite silly, is actually pretty good, and Ringo Starr’s and George Harrison’s haircuts were ghastly. I can only hope they remaster and re-release the movie next year.

Magical Mystery Tour, in 1967, was the last of all four of them acting together in the entire film, and it was, to put it shortly, bizarre. I liked it, personally, but it was really just silly, and it seemed like almost the entire film was just a bunch of music videos sewn together. The late ‘60s were a very.. recreational time, and I can only imagine that this movie was a product of it. Especially the flying scene.

Yellow Submarine, in 1968, was really quite bizarre to me. It lacked a certain charm all the other movies had, and that was mostly because they weren’t actually in the movie until the last two minutes. They didn’t even voice themselves. I do like certain aspects of the art style, and the Eleanor Rigby part is quite interesting and, in a more rough way, pretty. It was definitely impressive for that time. Overall, the movie feels almost forced. It’s weird for the sake of being weird, as my mother put it. After watching it a few times and getting more used to it, I will admit I do like it, but it is not my favorite.

Next week, I’ll change the pace back to Marvel movies and I’ll be reviewing the Avengers! Have a Marvelous weekend!

Batista

Dave Bautista (spelled ‘Batista’ in the WWE) has really elevated his celebrity status in recent years. With the Guardians of the Galaxy having the biggest August opening yet, his name is becoming more well known amongst the general public every day. Then why do pro-wrestling fans hate him so?

Wrestling fans are an interesting bunch. Very loyal to the product and the performers, but if you look at them sideways they will turn on you instantly and wish you death. When Batista made his big WWE return earlier this year the reaction was huge and the fans went wild, but the next day those same fans decided to boo him and turn on him for no apparent reason. He is pretty outspoken in regards to his opinions on a wide variety of topics, but nothing so bad that I feel would make him unlikable.  He may not be the greatest in ring performer of all time, but he performs his role in the ring very well and has been a part of some big WWE story lines and matches.

Perhaps it is the old “he sold out” routine. Those fans are right…how dare he try to be a successful actor and wrestler! He is at the beck and call of the fans and should do what they say *major sarcasm*.

Plain and simple, just like The Rock before him, he will always be a wrestler and now has added film acting to his resume. Good for him and after the Guardians of the Galaxy he is only going to become a bigger star and us wrestling fans will just have to learn to share him with the rest of the world.

Guardians of the Galaxy Review

guardian-of-the-galaxy-poster

Now THAT was a summer blockbuster!

Guardians of the Galaxy was simply fantastic. Well written, perfectly acted, publicized perfectly, and just a grade A example of how to create a new movie franchise that people will love.

This is a movie that must be seen to be believed. Directed by James Gunn it had the feeling of a big Marvel film, but laced with Gunn’s sensibilities. He is a very unique, exciting, and intelligent film maker (Slither and Super being two of his most notable) and it seemed like this may be a monumental task for someone used to working with small budgets. Given a significant amount of money for Guardians he showed he was ready to be a big time, mainstream director and not lose any of his appeal as a singular, creative force.

The story was pretty darn faithful to the comic books and changes were made where appropriate. The casting was spot on as well. Chris Pratt as Star-Lord was a genius casting choice. Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Dave Buatista as Drax were inspired casting choices and they embodied the characters better than anyone else could have. Lee Pace and Karen Gillan as Ronan and Nebula respectively were perfect villains for this film. Even Vin Diesel as Groot was a great choice despite the severely limited verbiage.

The standout though (which is hard to achieve with such a terrific cast) is Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket. Wow! He could have come off goofy but wth the great CGI and the top notch voice work he is becoming a beloved character of many a non comic book fan.

I even loved the post credits scene which was so off the wall which was a great choice for this film.

This is a must see movie. You need no knowledge of the characters to fall in love with it. It is very similar to the first Star Wars movie in that respect.

What are you waiting for? Go see it now!

Costume Corner – Renaissance Wedding, Part 3

Hello again!  So sorry that I missed posting this last week.  I sprained my wrist and typing was seriously not working for me.  After several attempts, I thought it would be better if I let my wrist heal rather than make a two week injury last four or five weeks.

This week, I’ll be talking about dresses; bridesmaids, attendants and a few others.

BridesmaidsBridesmaids

I’ve already mentioned that I used Simplicity pattern #8735 for the bridesmaid dresses, and specifically this version, which I believe is style B.

In Costume Corner – Renaissance Wedding, Part 1, I talked about the main modification to the dresses, the separate underskirt.  The underskirt was made with silkessence and a rounded elastic neckline.  We made a minor adjustment with the gauntlets, the floating sleeve pieces.  I opted to eliminate them from my dress but the bridesmaids liked them so they were left in their outfits.  The pattern had them attach with grommets and ribbon or cording.  Our original experience with setting the grommets was not successful so we opted to go with out them.  My bridesmaid in the purple dress, Bea*, added elastic to hers which worked great.  I wanted to add elastic to the others but the outfits were already with the bridesmaids.  We were in the final stretch and due to the time crunch, schedules, and geography it just didn’t happen.  The gauntlets ended up a little slouchy over extended wearing but it was a little thing, so I didn’t stress about it.

CC RW 3a

This first photo is my sister and Matron of Honor in burgundy and silver as she walks down the aisle.  All four of my bridesmaids are shown in the next image, showing the different colors.  I am going to go ahead and brag about making the bouquets too.  They were fun to make and turned out exactly how I wanted them.  In the final photo, you can see Jay and Bea walking down the aisle.  You can see the nice flow of the dress as she walks.  I helped with Bea’s dress but she did a fair amount of the finish work too.

CC RW 3bHere you can see the back of Bea’s dress.   I finally got the hang of setting grommets and they looked great strung with the ribbon.  Bea used metallic silver ribbon to lace the back closed.  It took a fair amount of time and dexterity to lace the dresses, not overly complicated but not a super quick thing either.

Other dresses

I made a fifth bridesmaid dress for a friend that took on the job of stage manager the day of the wedding.  She made sure that everyone was in the right place when the wedding started.  Each bridesmaid and groomsman knew when to start down the aisle and my two flower girls felt very comfortable knowing they had someone right there to help them know when to go.  My two nieces that helped to carry my train down the aisle had similar dresses with simple muslin underskirts and no gauntlets.

Simplicity 8192

Simplicity #8192

I used Simplicity pattern #8192 for two friends, one helped with my hair and makeup and the other was in charge of the guest book.  I don’t have any good pictures of their dresses**  I used the main style from the pattern except I changed it so the little top laced in the back.  Neither friend was fond of the overly boob-ish look when laced in the front.  Modifying the over-bodice wasn’t too difficult, I combined this pattern with the bodice pattern from the bridesmaid dresses.

One dress had a lavender underskirt with a silver over-bodice.  The other was a dark red underskirt, with a woolen plaid over-bodice to reflect her Scottish heritage.

Flower girls
Butterick 6203

Butterick #6203

My two youngest nieces were my flower girls.  I found this pattern, Butterick #6203, it was clearly a different style but it was so cute that it wasn’t an issue at all.

A decision was made early on in the wedding planning that my family would be wearing burgundy and silver.  While growing up my father was a high school football coach and many of those years had been spent at the same school.  My father started teaching at the school the year before I was born and was still there while my older brother, then my sister attended and me, as the youngest.  It just seemed logical that that the family colors would be red and gray, or for Renaissance sake, burgundy and silver.

I’ve already mentioned my sister and posted a photo of her dress.  My brother and his wife, have four kids, so they did a lot of sewing.  My sister-in-law and eldest niece wore burgundy velvet dresses that looked almost exactly like the photo on the pattern, they looked amazing.

CC RW 3c

My two youngest nieces though saw the pattern and insisted on purple.  I remember talking to my brother about the issue.  He had put off the call because he didn’t want to upset me since he knew I was busy with wedding prep.  I think I said something about if the girls wanted to wear purple that I was fine with that.  I heard a big sigh and “oh good, because they both were pretty adamant on wearing purple dresses.”

When I saw my nieces the morning of the wedding, I was blown away.  The dresses were amazing and they were so proud of how pretty they looked.  Yes, there was twirling.  Honestly, they couldn’t have been cuter.  It’s been almost fourteen years since then and they are both in college,  hopefully they won’t hate me for posting this photo but it’s one of my favorite memories from the wedding.

Mother of the Bride

My mother’s dress was kind of an unknown entity.  During planning my mother wasn’t exactly helpful, not that she was difficult really.  There were a few things going on but she kept saying stuff like “oh whatever you want to do, is fine with me.”  Of course, that translated to me that she wasn’t that interested in her dress.

CC RW 3dOn one of my shopping trips I found a black velvet with a glittery silver pattern.  I know black seemed like an odd choice but I just thought it would perfect.  There was something really classic and regal about it.  My mom was really skeptical and I told her to trust me, and, well, she did and it turned out great.  I made my mother’s dress almost completely without a pattern.   She was cooking and I had my sewing machine set up on the kitchen table.  I would measure her and then cut stuff out

and then sew it together and try it on her.  Essentially her dress is the same as the bridesmaids and family dresses but my mom was tiny.  She was 4′ 10″ tall and weighed a little over 100 pounds, maybe.  I made a silver underdress like the rest except I made custom sleeves.  I used the black velvet but split the sleeves vertically in the middle and added a gusseted piece of the silver.   This where I am going to brag, this was like a Project Runway moment for me, before the show was even on.  I pretty much made these sleeves by ‘draping’ the fabric on her arm, I made marks using pins, cut it out and sewed it together.  The overdress went over the underskirt and it looked great.  My mother was impressed and then broke down in tears. She finally told me that her hesitance in getting involved had to do with not adding more stress for me and that she was a little in denial over her little girl getting married.CC RW 3e

In 2009, we dressed as vampires for Halloween.  Scarlet wore my mother’s overdress over a new purple underdress and looked quite tragic and soulless.  If you click on the photo you can see the glittery pattern a little better.

Cap’s mom made her dress from this pattern, Butterick #6197, which I loved.  She used a dark royal blue brocade with a red underskirt.    She took her hat from the pattern on the right, McCalls #7756.

Next week, I will wrap things up with the groomsmen, other men’s outfits and the minister’s robe.

Thor

Hey guys! This week, I’ll be reviewing Thor!

I think Thor is a great movie. Aliens are an important part of the Avengers, seeing as they fight Skrulls, Chitauri, Thanos, and Galactus. Overall, aliens are a big part of the Marvel Universe, but the list is too long to talk about now. This was a great way to not just introduce Thor, but also introduce the extraterrestrial part of the Marvel universe.

In the original comic books, Odin decides Thor needs to be taught humility, and thus places Thor (without any memories of his godhood) into the body and memories of an existing, partially disabled, human medical student, Dr. Donald Blake. On a vacation, he witnesses the arrival of an alien scouting party. He then flees from them, and into a cave. He discovers Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, which is disguised as a walking stick. He strikes it against a rock, and transforms into the god of thunder. Blake is later revealed, in Thor #158, that he has always been Thor. After defeating the aliens, he shares a double life with his alter ego, treating the ill in a private practice with nurse – and eventual love – Jane Foster, and defending humanity from evil.

Thor was also made so that someone could be as strong/stronger than the Hulk, which I personally think is interesting.

Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal as Thor was fantastic. He looks so much like his comic book counterpart, and he really nails the accent, Hemsworth being from Australia. I enjoyed how they didn’t stray too far off from the comic book’s original telling of Thor, but that they didn’t follow it completely. His design was perfect, too. It had the cape, the helmet with wings, it was just more realistic, and I appreciate that.

I love Darcy and Eric, I think they’re fantastic supporting characters, and I would love Darcy to be a permanent fixture in the Avengers. She’s so funny, but smart, and I think she can be a legitimate character and not just comic relief. Odin is a horrible father. Frigga, even though we do not see her much, is really interesting, and I think her parts in the sequel are incredibly important.

Loki is a really interesting villain. I feel as though, at first, he was a victim, like Bucky/The Winter Soldier, but then he made himself into the villain. That was not completely Odin’s doing, but Odin did have a part in that. He could have told him he was a Frost Giant before it was too late. Don’t get me wrong, I love Loki, but I certainly do not look at him and pity him after the whole ‘I got Frost Giants to kill my fake dad but then I killed them so I could get my mother’s pity and be a hero’ incident. And, as always, love his design. It’s fitted perfectly to Tom Hiddleston, (who’s performance as Loki, in my opinion, was fantastic) all while keeping the essence of the original design.

Lady Sif and the Warriors Three were amazing supporting characters, too. The Warriors Three includes Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg. I think they did a great job with them, and I could see there being a movie on just them. It’s not likely, but I would enjoy it.

Everything was designed so perfectly, and I just love that. Asgard was stunning, the Rainbow Bridge was gorgeous, and Jotunheim was hauntingly beautiful. The fight scenes were fantastic, and fit in well.

I don’t feel like Natalie Portman was the best choice. I do like Natalie Portman, but I just feel like Jane Foster doesn’t come off like she should. I really can’t pinpoint what I don’t like about her performance, and it’s not like I hate her, or anything like that, I just think it might have been better with someone else.

The Donald Blake reference was great, but also I really adore how they didn’t make it that Thor was possessing Donald Blake. It honestly would have made Thor weirder than it was suppose to be. I think that would have really made a plot hole too big and would have forced an unnecessary love triangle (Thor falls in love with Lady Sif because Jane didn’t pass a trial given by Odin so Thor could wed her).

It was awesome to see a glimpse of Clint Barton, or better known as Hawkeye! I think it was a great, but small, intro to a character we see in the Avengers.

Loki’s ‘death’ scene was heartbreaking. I found sympathy for everyone in that scene. Loki letting go, realizing he has dishonored his family too much. Thor, having to watch his brother die, and Odin, realizing he truly did make a mistake.

Next week, another change of pace, but I’ll be giving four short reviews on the four short Beatles movies, from the swinging ‘60s! Have a Marvelous weekend!

Saturday Night’s Main Event

SNME-logo

Hot damn the WWE Network has started showing the original Saturday Night’s Main Event!

In the late ’80s this was the show to watch for all young wrestling fans. It aired on NBC a handful of times a year in place of Saturday Night Live when it was showing repeats.

They always featured the top wrestlers in the company. Regularly, you got to see the likes of Hogan, Savage, Steamboat, JYD, etc…in some memorable matches and story lines. It was typical ’80s cartoonish wrestling and it was perfect for that time. I still love revisiting these shows and having nothing but good memories.

When the network debuted SNME was possibly the most requested show by fans and now the WWE has delivered.

There are several episodes already on the network with the rest to follow soon.

This is reason number 101 to subscribe to the WWE Network!

Fozzy

UntitledFOZ

Last Tuesday the much anticipated new Fozzy release, Do You Wanna Start a War, came out and did not disappoint. This is definitely one of the best metal/rock albums to come out in quite some time. I have been listening to Fozzy since their first release of cover songs and love that they have evolved so masterfully from a gimmick band to a legitimate heavy metal act that you must listen to and see live in concert whenever you have the chance. They are simply one of the best rock bands today, period.

Their previous release, Sin and Bones, received rave reviews and the standard concern is that the next release will not live up to the hype. Do You Wanna Start a War not only lives up to the hype, but surpasses it. This is now a seasoned band who have found their identity and strive to only give their fans the very best possible.

From the first track (where the title comes from) to the final, Witchery, Fozzy never lets up for even a minute. Most albums feature maybe a couple of damn good songs, but this one is chock full of them.

Lights Go Out is one of those songs that has instant hit written all over it and even after listening to the song over and over again I cannot seem to get sick of it.

If you ever have the pleasure of listening to lead singer Chris Jericho’s podcast, Talk is Jericho, you have heard the title song, Lights Go Out, and the hard hitting One Crazed Anarchist regularly for the past few weeks and for any other band those probably would have been the only great tracks, but not in this case.

Tonight is one of those songs that reminds me of 1990’s Kiss (which I love) and you cannot help but smile and find yourself in a good mood after listening to it.

SOS has quickly become one of my favorite songs of all time. It has that 1980’s rock ballad feel, yet still comes off modern, and you immediately find yourself singing to the chorus.

All 12 tracks are top notch songs and you can tell that the whole band busted their asses to put out the best rock album in years.

I remember when Jericho started Fozzy and some people treated them like they were jokes and I would say from the beginning that they were wrong and over time this was going to be one of those bands that everyone would change their minds about and lo and behold I was correct.

If you still have not jumped on the Fozzy bandwagon now is the time to do so before you are left in the dust.
