Captain America: The First Avenger

Hey guys! This week, I’ll be reviewing Captain America: The First Avenger.

I love Captain America: The First Avenger. While my favorite comic book character is Spider-Man/Peter Parker, this is my favorite film adaption of any character.

I like Johann Schmidt, I appreciate the motive without pity. The ruthlessness of his character is intriguing, and how Hugo Weaving played the Red Skull was fantastic, although I think it would have been much more interesting to make the Red Skull look more burned and scarred, but I understand that there is a fine line between intimidating and frightening.

I don’t just love Captain America, I love Steve Rogers.

In the comic books, his mother and father, Sarah and Joseph, are two poor Irish immigrants, moved to New York, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Joseph died when Steve was only a child, and Sarah died of pneumonia while Steve was a teenager. Before America’s entry into World War II, Rogers is a small scrawny fine arts student, specializing in illustration, and is also a comic book artist and writer.

I love that they did acknowledge his art career in the movie, if briefly. I also enjoy the brief mention of his parents, it’s enough to give him back story without delving into it. When he transforms into Captain America, I enjoy that he’s still intelligent. He doesn’t just become a big hunk of muscle.

My opinion on the man in the movie theater, the one that beat Steve up, was actually pretty interesting. How he was used in places throughout the entire film was pretty cool. I also find the woman crying in the theater to be much more meaningful than it was meant to be.

I just love James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes. In the original comics, he’s only just a little kid, but then he was revived as The Winter Soldier and was obviously much older. I like how in the movies he’s an adult, because a kid fighting in the war is pretty obscure. How he’s cocky but has a heart of gold is what me makes love him so much. How Bucky is there for Steve when he’s getting beaten up, and how he looks over to him to see if he’s still there during the Stark Expo, you can really see that Bucky, at times, was Steve’s caretaker. Steve Rogers had asthma, heart troubles, palpitations (an abnormality of heartbeat characterized by simultaneous awareness of one’s pulse and discomfort), sinusitis, and at one time Scarlet Fever and Rheumatic Fever. With both his parents gone, it would only make sense for Bucky, Steve’s best friend, to have taken care of Steve in the past. You can tell that they love each other too. And take it however you want, but they do love each other.

My feelings on Doctor Arnim Zola is that he’s even more interesting than the Red Skull. While they merely sort of allude to him having a more detailed back story, I appreciate that.

Margaret “Peggy” Carter was fantastic. She was a strong woman, who didn’t need anyone to support her. She wasn’t just a love interest for Steve, she was her own character, and I adore that.

As always with Marvel films, the CGI was outstanding. The Costume Department and Prop Department outdid themselves, too. It seemed like they time traveled back to the 40’s, it looks so amazing. And I really respect Marvel for not making their movies so extremely dark. Just because adults are watching the movie, it doesn’t mean it has to have death around every corner.

Captain America, in my opinion, means  that even though you can always change and grow, you’re always gonna be who you truly are.

Next week, I’ll be reviewing Thor. Have a Marvelous weekend.

WWE Battleground 2014

WWE Battleground has come and gone and as usual it is sort of a throwaway PPV. This year the thought was that may change leading in to a big Summerslam show next month, but it was more of the same.

A few matches of note:

Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho – Jericho is simply one of the best wrestlers of all time, but this match just seemed a bit off. I am really feeling that Bray Wyatt is a bit overrated. He has an interesting character that is very over with the crowd, he is not too bad of an in ring performer, but of all of his big PPV matches this year the only one that was truly great was his third and final match against John Cena at Payback in a last man standing match. He has not had enough good matches to be as over as he is right now. Hopefully, the two of them wil have a much better rematch at Summerslam and Jericho can make him look good.

Paige vs. AJ Lee – Eh…this was another match that just seemed off. They need to get someone to really work with their women wrestlers on their in-ring work. They also need to book these matches much better. Both women are good performers, but they really seemed lost in the ring on this night.

Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose – No actual match, but some fun backstage, and in the parking lot, brawling. Hopefully, we will actually get a match next month.

The highlight of the night was the first match pitting The Usos against The Wyatt Family. Hot damn these four have nothing but great matches against each other. 2 out of three falls with The Usos coming out on top was surprising. I am a big fan of them, but thought they would have the Wyatts come out on top. The match was great from start to finish and it will be interesting to see what’s next from both teams.

Overall, the show was okay, but this is not a must watch show. Watch that tag match at the beginning and you will be good to go.

Next month is Summerslam and I have high hopes it will be a great show!

Guardians of the Galaxy

On August 01 Guardians of the Galaxy hits the big screen and could be one of the biggest movies of the year if not the biggest.

Marvel is taking a calculated risk that could turn out to be it’s biggest reward with a property that us long time comic book readers are familiar with, but the main stream crowd has never heard of.

This is an eclectic group of characters led by Star-Lord/Peter Quill who is being played by Chris Pratt. Anyone familiar with Parks and Recreation knows he is quite funny and it will be interesting to see him bring some of that humor to a more lighthearted character, but still show us the action packed superhero style we have all come to love from Marvel movies.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Dave Bautista as Drax look perfectly cast in their roles and it will be fun to see what they bring to these characters.

The biggest test will be to see how Groot and Rocket Racoon come off in the film. On the surface they could be the two most ridiculous characters we will ever see in film, but they could turn out to be the most popular in the movie. What little I have seen is very promising and I cannot wait until opening night.

I am a fan of director James Gunn. I thoroughly enjoyed Slither and Super and really enjoy his unique style of movie making. He is the perfect person to bring these crazy characters to the movies.

If this movie turns out to be as good as it looks I sincerely hope people flock to the theaters to see it so we can continue to see more of the obscure comic book characters hit the big screen.

I will see it opening weekend and hope everyone else does too.

Costume Corner – Renaissance Wedding, Part 2

Last week, I talked about where I got the ideas that inspired the attire for my Renaissance wedding.  In this post, I am going to try to connect those original ideas with the actual garments.

I feel like I should start this off with mentioning that historical accuracy wasn’t really in the forefront of my thought process.  It was my wedding; I wanted to look pretty, I wanted to be comfortable and I wanted people to have fun.  I definitely wanted a Renaissance look, but, honestly, those three things were my main criteria.

My Wedding Dress

CC RW 2a

*Funny moment

As you’ve seen in the previous Costume Corner post, I incorporated a lot of blue into my dress.  This happened for a number of reasons, the most important being that blue is my favorite color.  The particular color I chose had to do with my engagement ring.  Weirdly enough, I am not a huge fan of diamonds, I think they look great on other people but they’re just not that exciting to me.  Sapphire and blue topaz have always caught my eye and thankfully Cap was an amazing listener.  When he proposed he presented me with a beautiful ring, an oval cut blue topaz set on a white gold and yellow gold band.  It was beautiful and perfect and I still love it fourteen years later.  I’d post a picture but I lack the ability to take a good photo of the ring, and if I post a pic I want it to look as beautiful as possible.  Also, no one needs to see my hands today, I was painting earlier and there are still some traces of Star Shine evident.  No need to worry, all of my rings were removed earlier and are safe on my ring holder.

Blue fabric

Glitter organza – Silkessence

So, I knew that I wanted blue topaz in my dress, I also knew that the main part of the dress should be kind of bridal looking.  I didn’t necessarily think it needed to be bright white but I didn’t rule it out either.  I went through several ideas, a white dress with a sheer white overlay, a blue dress with a white underskirt, a white dress with a detachable train, a white dress with a blue cape, blue dress with a snowy white cape, white dress with a blue train, and probably twenty other ideas that I don’t remember at this point.  When I came across the Simplicity #8735 pattern I began to really see what I wanted to do.  I had found the Silkessence and the Glitter organza in the perfect shade of blue.  All I needed to do at this point was find fabric that would go with the blue.  I wandered through several fabric stores armed with some sample pieces of my blue fabric, finally I found something that caught my eye.

Dress brocadeI found this cream brocade at a large fabric store.  I bought what was left on the roll which I believe came to about 20 yards.  I knew I wanted a long train and since I wasn’t sure of the specifics it seemed smarter to buy it right then rather than needing to go back and hoping it would still be there.

I posted two photos to show both the pattern and the sheen, which clearly changes depending on how the light hits it.  The cream colored floral pattern is raised with the champagne colored shiny background.  The pattern and color seemed elegant and regal, which was perfect for the theme.   I loved it, still do, and it went well with the blue.

Sewing notes –

I already mentioned that I used the bodice from McCall’s pattern #2308, I should also mention that I modified it so that it clasped in the front.  I could have done grommets and lace it up in the back like the bridesmaids dresses or added a zipper, which I believe was part of the actual pattern instructions.  The overskirt was going to be open in the front so I thought it just made sense to have the bodice clasp in the front.   Also, I love how the grommets and lacing look but they can be a pain to work with, add that to the weight of the fabric and the front closure just seemed like an even better idea.  I cut the pattern pieces out of muslin first to test my idea out.  I followed the pattern until I got to the middle part where the pattern piece would normally sit on the edge.  Before I started cutting I had set the pattern about six inches from the edge, I stopped cutting the diagonal with about 5 inches left and cut straight across to the edge of the fabric.  I cut out a one piece back piece and sewed the two together to make a mock up bodice.  With the help of my mom and sister, we pinned the muslin until it fit the way that I wanted.  I turned the muslin into a pattern for the actual bodice for my dress.

Hook and bar closure

I used two hook and bar closures in the front,  one at the ‘V’ where the front met and the second, slightly lower at the seamline where the bodice met the skirt.  The two clasps worked perfectly with the heavy fabric and there was no worry that if I shifted that the front would open accidentally.

Train

hooks and eyes

My train was made up of three panels of fabric, 54 inches wide and four yards long.  At the top, I gathered it into large pleats and hand stitched them into place.  Originally, the train was going to attach at the waist but the weight of the train pulled straight down making the front of the dress all scatterwhoppy (yes, that is the technical term).  My mother suggested attaching it at the shoulders, which kind of satisfied my wish for a cape.  I used large hook and eye closures, I sewed two eyes on each shoulder of my dress and matching hooks at the top of each side of the train.  It attached and detached easily and didn’t cause the front of the dress to shift.  There was some pulling during the ceremony when we turned to face each other and no one thought to rearrange the train behind me but it was a minor thing.

Veil

My veil was essentially the same as the train.  I hand sewed three panels together, then gathered the top edges to the width that I wanted.  I had a pretty but simple gold tiara, I wrapped ribbon around the ends, feeding it throughCC RW 2b the spaces between the comb teeth.  I sewed snaps onto the ribbon and to the top veil edges, making the veil detachable for the reception.  I added flowers to camouflage the gathers and turn the tiara into a flower crown.

Gold oval bead

The bottom edge of the veil was lined with gold oval beads.  I hand sewed the beads on the veil and around the hem and  front edges of my dress.   The beads were strung on thread and then hand sewn onto the hem and the veil.  I spent a lot of time hand sewing while watching TV those last several months before the wedding.

Fairly good view of my train and veil.

Fairly good view of my train and veil.

My Renaissance wedding was supposed to be one post but apparently I have a lot to say about it.  Next week, I’ll be talking about dresses; bridesmaids, attendants and a few others.  See you next week!

* We were laughing in this photo because the minister began our ceremony with the ‘Maiwwage’ monologue from ‘The Princess Bride’.  It was awesome and perfect, a great start to what we wanted to feel like a big party rather than a boring wedding.

The Fault in Our Stars‏

Hey guys! Today, the review of the Fault in our Stars is rather short, but it’s all I honestly have to say about it. I think it was a good movie, I don’t have much to say about it though.

I think the book was better than the movie. I find that the book worked more on the actual experience they went through, both together and not together. I think the movie was much more a teen romance movie than the drama-romance it was. I feel like the book was much more realistic. But, since this is a movie review and not a book review, I will try my hardest not to give a lot of the book away and not just jump into a review of it.

My biggest thing, in the entire movie, is the fact that they did not look like they were actually sick. They looked like healthy teenagers with baggy jeans. I understand that there’s not a lot you can do about how the actors actually look. This wasn’t the highest budget film, so they obviously couldn’t use CGI, especially not throughout the entire movie. I just think that maybe they could have at least tried something with Augustus near the end of the film. They missed out on a lot of important parts in the book, too.

Something big they missed was the funeral with Hazel and Augustus. I think they could have just used some special camerawork and not shown Augustus in the casket, but instead shown Hazel. It was a heartbreaking moment, Hazel leaving her oxygen tank with her parents and then proceeding to cry over Augustus and put the cigarette case in with him. While sounding odd so condensed, I feel like that was an important and emotional part that should have gone in the movie, including some more parts with Augustus dying.

I think the meaning of the movie is sweet. I enjoy the sudden ending. It lets us all think different endings for Hazel’s story. Some of us think she might have died there, on the grass, some of us think she lived on for however long, and some of us think nothing. Some of us leave the story there.

I’m mostly just proud of John Green, the author of the book and writer of the movie. This book is one of his most popular books, and was the first to become a movie. I feel glad for him and proud of him for being able to do something all writers want to do. I hope that Paper Towns, another one of his novels that was just announced to become a movie, comes out great. I can only hope they cast like they did in the Fault in our Stars.

Next week, I’ll be going back to Marvel movies and reviewing Captain America! Have a Marvelous weekend!

Sting (not the singer)

wwe-2k15

Sting is officially a part of the upcoming WWE 2K15 game which launches October 28 of this year.

This also means he is officially part of the WWE, but in what capacity remains to be seen.

He is the last of the big name WCW wrestlers to make an appearance in the WWE and it has been a long time coming. When Vince McMahon bought WCW Sting made the decision not to join the WWE and once his final WCW contract was up he started a fairly long run with TNA.

There have been rumors year after year of him joining the WWE, but it never came to be until now.

I have always been a fan of Sting from his bleach blonde surfer days to ‘The Crow’ gimmick and always felt he should have joined WWE where he could have had a legendary run. He purportedly stayed away due to his disliking of the WWE’s adult approach, but it seems ever since they went to a more PG product he has decided to end his career with the one organization he had never been a part of.

It is still a mystery as to what else his role will be with the company besides being in a video game, but I sincerely hope we get at least one more match from him at next year’s Wrestlemania so he can say he wrestled in all the major promotions and us long time fans can give him one last goodbye and thank him for an amazing run.

Night of the Living Podcast

Out of the 10 podcasts I listen to regularly the one that I have enjoyed the longest is NOTLP aka Night of the Living Podcast. Hosted by Andy, Kelley, Freddy, Amy, Chiz, and Erica, they cover everything horror related and have been around since 2006. I have been listening to them for the past 5 years and have not missed an episode since. They are simply hilarious and all 6 hosts are immensely entertaining.

They post a new show most Sundays and I always eagerly look to download it so I have something to start my week off right. They are currently on regular episode 374 but have several special episodes they have done from Horror Hound weekends, with special guests, etc…

They are definitely more adult oriented with their bawdy sense of humor and the fact that they review/discuss horror movies, books, etc… Their humor is not for everyone, but that is what makes them great. They are true to who they are and are not afraid to share their twisted brand of humor with their appreciative listeners.

If you are a fan of the horror genre and love large amounts of humor thrown in for good measure then you must give this podcast a try.

Costume Corner – Renaissance Wedding, Part 1

Way back in 1999, I met my husband, Cap.  We were both working in a large chain bookstore, in between school and permanent career type employment.  We first started talking about marriage on the road trip back from Disneyland.  I mentioned that I thought a Renaissance themed wedding would be fun and Cap agreed.  I knew he was a keeper.

I started doing some research on different styles and began narrowing down my preferences.  I came back to some movies that had started my interest in the time period.   There’s more than likely some historical inaccuracies in many or all of these but that wasn’t really a primary concern at the time.  I loved the Old Hollywood swashbucklers like ‘Robin Hood’ with Errol Flynn and the 70’s version of the Musketeer movies with Michael York and Raquel Welch.  In the 90’s, I enjoyed ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ and ‘The Three Musketeers’ with Kiefer Sutherland and Gabrielle Anwar.  My absolute favorites were ‘The Princess Bride’ and ‘Ever After’, the movies came out ten years apart, fall of 1987 and summer of 1998, respectively.  Both films influenced a great deal of the planning of our wedding.

Dresses

The Princess Bride

Princess Bride trio KC

Buttercup’s dresses were beautiful, I loved the flowy sleeves and the trains from the shoulder.  I especially loved the color and fabric of the blue dress.

Ever After

EverAfter Trio KC

Danielle’s dresses were beautiful too, especially the split front overdress that added so much fluidity to the bottom of the dress.  I also liked the overlay of the necklines on the overdress and underskirt in both the gold dress and the ball dress.

My final result incorporated elements from both movies.

Patterns

I am addicted to buying costume patterns, so, I own almost every Renaissance pattern that has been available at Joann Crafts in the last fifteen years.

Simplicity 8735

Simplicity 8735

For the bridesmaids, I used the style in the lower right hand corner of Simplicity 8735*.

The main modification to this dress, is making a separate underskirt.  I used silkessence for the underskirt, cutting a new pattern that eliminated a front seam and added a rounded elastic neckline.   The sleeves were made from sparkly sheer material that I believe was called ‘glitter organza’.

The bridesmaids were able to pick any color for their dress except blue.  They also were able to pick any appropriate fabric.  I sewed a purple brocade, a deep red damask, hunter green velvet and a goldenrod shangtung.

Bridal dress

I combined the Simplicity 8735 pattern with the McCalls P477** for my dress.

McCalls 2806

McCalls 2806

I used the bodice of the overdress with the V- neckline from the McCall’s and made the underskirt using the Simplicity.

The skirt part of my overdress had some issues, in a stressed moment I made the decision to cut straight panels for the skirt and just gather them at the waist where the skirt meets the bodice.  The fabric was so heavy and thick that gathering so much fabric at the waist wasn’t such a good idea.  Now that I know much more about sewing, I would have made flared pieces for the skirt.  Sections that would be thin at the waistline and then flair out as they extend down to the hem.  Live and learn though, right?

For my fabrics, I chose an ivory brocade with a champagne background for the overdress with blue topaz for the underskirt.  I also had a 15 foot train attached at my shoulders.

Here’s a picture of my father walking me down the aisle.  Two of my nieces helped carry my train as I walked.  They had to really hold on to the corners because it rained on and off before the ceremony.  If you look closely you can see that the brick is still wet.  You can also see that the little jog in the hemline closest to my dad.  Someone stepped on it while we were getting ready and it wasn’t noticed until right before we walked out the door.

CC RW 1a

I intended on getting into the planning and sewing part of things a little bit more but the internet is being dodgy due to construction and possibly some storm action.  Next week, I will try to share some more details.

Until then… have a great week!

*I believe Simplicity 8735 is out of print.  I remember at some point seeing it under a different number but I haven’t seen it recently.

**McCall’s P477, was also released as #2806 but that seems to be out of print as well.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Hey guys! Thanks for coming back for this week’s Fandom Friday! Like I promised last week, I’ll be discussing The Amazing Spider-Man.

We’ve already discussed what Peter Parker and Spider-Man are like in the comic books, so I won’t go over that again.

I find that Andrew Garfield’s interpretation of Peter Parker blows Tobey Maquire’s out of the water. I can relate to him ten times better than I can Maquire, and that is a big part about Spider-Man. I mean, especially for younger audiences, what’s more relatable than a teenager with work problems, relationship problems, social anxiety, sarcasm, and just all around teenage angst? I feel like Andrew Garfield’s interpretation really nails that.

I like how they started off with Gwen Stacy. I’m really pleased with that. I love how Emma Stone plays her, too. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone really click, and you can see that, which makes their characters’ relationship seem much more real. I haven’t seen the second movie, but from what I’ve read and also accidentally seen, it seems like they did a good job on her death too.

I adore the fact that they got more into Peter Parker’s parent’s, Richard and Mary Parker, backstory. Their backstory is crazy, but it’s really interesting too. They’re agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I feel like that says enough about them.

I really enjoy Flash Thompson in the first Spider-man movie. I like how Chris Zylka played him, and I like how he is three dimensional, how he has a backstory even if we aren’t told about it. Bullies are bullies for a reason, they hurt people for a reason, and I enjoy that in the movie they acknowledge that. I love how they allude to his love of Spider-Man at the end of the film, too.

I like how Peter is seriously smart, too. He made his suit all by himself, he made his webshooters all by himself, how he became Spider-Man almost completely by himself. While yes, the super-spider-bite does give him wall-crawling ability, the infamous Spidey-Sense, and some strength and agility he didn’t already have, he doesn’t just suddenly have wits, he isn’t just suddenly smart, he isn’t just suddenly Spider-Man too. What he first did with his powers was hunting down his uncle’s killer. He didn’t realize he had a responsibility by putting on that suit.

The scene where Peter Parker saves the kid on the bridge was amazing. How Peter has Jack, the boy, wear his mask, acknowledges the fact that it’s really not about who’s inside the suit, it’s about what the suit means, who you truly are inside. That was also the moment Peter realized he didn’t have to kill someone else to avenge his uncle. That moment was when he realized he could protect his city and its people to avenge his uncle.

Spider-Man is all about the choices you make and how they effect you and the people you love.. The Amazing Spider-Man shows that so much better than the original trilogy.

I love how Denis Leary plays Captain George Stacy. It’s surprising just how well he plays it.  I also love the argument between Peter and Captain Stacy. It shows that Peter has courage, another thing he has with and without his powers.

The fondness that Doctor Connors has for Peter, and the curiosity that Peter has for Connors is really intriguing and is quite real. And while it was only in a deleted scene, they did show that Connors wasn’t just a scientist gone mad from pressure, he had a family, he was a father. And the CGI with his arm was great.

I really enjoy how they designed the Lizard. It goes back to the original comic book designs, and I appreciate that, along with the scene after he escapes the sewers with the ripped lab coat. His mouth, during some parts, could have done with a bit more movement and fluidity.

Uncle Ben’s and Captain Stacy’s death scenes were devastating, but in the best way.

I really like the acknowledgement of his wrestling career, I think the fight scenes are just long enough, I love how Andrew produces Spider-Man’s quips and one-liners so naturally, and, as always, I love Stan Lee’s cameo.

I haven’t seen the Amazing Spider-Man 2 yet, so when I do I will review that too.

I really hope they give us information on that after credits scene as well.

It’s a change of pace, but next week I’ll be reviewing the Fault in our Stars.

Have a Marvelous weekend!

Talk is Jericho

download

When driving or trying getting through a long day at work I enjoy listening to podcasts which are essentially radio shows on demand. I currently listen to 10 regularly and several others on occasion. In my top 3 is Talk is Jericho hosted by wrestler/actor/musician/author and now podcast host Chris Jericho.

Some of the things I look for in a podcast is to be entertained, informed, and made to laugh. Jericho’s podcast does all three things very well. I have been listening to his show since the first episode and have never been disappointed. I enjoy the fact that he has a fairly wide variety of guests. He has had his father Ted Irvine who is a former NHL player, William Shatner, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and many others on the show. He seems to enjoy primarily interviewing people who are involved in things he loves himself which works for me since I have the same interests. It also makes his interviews very memorable since he really knows what he is talking about with his guests.

He is naturally a funny, charming, and intelligent person which comes off clearly on his podcast. His show is fairly family friendly so you can listen to it in front of your children or at work and not worry about what might be said.

This is the perfect podcast for wrestling, sports, or music fans and really anyone who just wants to smile while listening to something through their earbuds.
